In our household one of the most missed meals is breakfast! We are either getting ready for school or work ~ and for some reason in our house this tends to take up serious time getting ready for year 6 and making sure you actually get out of bed in time! or for my older son off surfing with minutes to spare before the school bell goes - with wet, salty hair!

It's old school, I know but I remember my Nan eating porriage every day with brown sugar and butter. The kids think its an old person's breakfast but making Overnight Oats called Apple Pie and pulling it out of the fridge with minutes to spare has won them over! Every morning for the past 3-4 weeks we have been eating these for breakfast and its easy for me I just make it the night before when cooking dinner! We have experimented with loads of different flavours BUT Apple Pie is still the Fav  🍏🥧🍎🥧🍏

Ingredients

1/2 cup of Traditional Oats

1 Tsp Chia Seeds (optional)

1/2 cup of Almond Milk ( you can use any milk of your choice)

1 Tsp of Natural Greek Yoghurt

1 tsp of Vanilla Extract

1 tsp of Maple Syrup

1/2 Green Apple cut into bite size pieces

1 tsp Cinnamon

 

Method

Now this is when it gets super serious ~ joking this would have to be the easiest recipe to make. The hardest part is finding the right jar to store it in. The jars i used are from Wheel & Barrow and the seal tight.

Start with the Base

Traditional Oats

It really important that you use traditional oats and not quick oats - it just won't work with quick oats. I also love to add white or black chia seeds to my base. Place both the oats (1/2 cup) and chia seeds (1Tsp white or black) into the glass.

Now add the Liquid & Stir Stir Stir

Now we add the milk. Here we used almond milk but you can use any form of milk you like - coconut | soy | almond | low fat any works. Stir and mix well. 

Tip - I love to mix the chia seeds and oats then place in the fridge for 20-30 mins and then mix again - that way the chia seeds won't clump and they are well mixed in.

 

 

Add all the Sweetness

In its time to make the apple pie sweetness. Add 1tsp of maple syrup | 1 tsp of vailla extract | 1/2 green apple cut into small pieces | 1Tsp natural Greek yoghurt. Stir this well. lastly i add the cinnamon on top.

The key to this is ensuring you have a tight seal. Seal the oats and place in the fridge over night.

We warm ours in the microwave slightly (30 seconds) to take the chill off, but honestly this has saved our mornings in our house... 

There are so many topping and favours you can make with these oats. Just get the base right and the rest is easy. Next up is Carrot Cake - its my little man's favourite. Chocolate | blueberry | banana split |cherry ripe so many. the trick to getting the kids to like it is making there favoutite sweet into a healthy breakfast treat!.
